"I've never sweat so much in my life! Normally, I get bored exercising, but Brazilian jiu jitsu keeps my attention fully. Normally, I'm a little lazy, but BJJ is so fun that I don't think about the effort.
Team Silva welcomes everyone. They encourage and support, with laughs thrown in, too. They clean meticulously, and prices are fair.
My kids attend the after school program, and now we have a hobby together. They're into it. What more could I ask for?"

"My 2 kids and I have been training with Sergio now for about 3 months. Having trained in BJJ in San Diego, I was looking for a local, professional studio with a good available training schedule for myself but more importantly, for my two kids ages 6 & 8. Finding Team Silva has been a real blessing. Sergio is a very dedicated instructor and just an all around great guy. If you are looking for the best martial art for self defense, look no further than Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. And, if you're lucky enough to live anywhere near Alameda or Hayward, check out Team Silva. As a bonus, the location in Alameda also offers several excellent Yoga classes. Health, fitness and self-defense for the entire family, doesn't get much better than this! "
Jose Cerda:
" My son Gavin has been training with Team Silva's kids BJJ class for about a year and a half and appears to have made a commitment to be part of the family for life. Mr. Sergio Silva is an amazing professor. He is positive, encouraging while teaching confidence, discipline and respect. Mr. Sergio gets the kids focused through loose sessions with games that incorporate technique to master the art. Team Silva is inviting and has a real sense of community and family. Gavin gets excited when he knows it is "BJJ day". His younger brother Landon participated in the toddler BJJ classes and had a blast. Landon is stoked to start classes with his brother. Thank you Mr. Sergio for all that you do. The Cerda-Zein's love that you and your family are part of our lives. "

"I first started training under Sergio as a child when I was 11 years old. This was 9 years ago when he had his first location in Oakland, Open Door. Despite putting my training on hold for 8 years, I always remembered how I felt training at the academy and the feeling I had after training jiu jitsu. Once you get a taste of jiu jitsu, it's very difficult, might I dare say impossible to fully stop.
Fast forward 8 years later I finally decided to continue my training again and it has been one of the best choices I've made in my life. Sergio still remembered who I was even after all the years I had taken off. He made me feel like I was coming back to a family, which was exactly what I needed.
I now help teach the kids classes at the alameda location located in the middle of park st (talk about coming full circle) and train there daily. With multiple locations around the Bay Area, there are opportunities to train before the sun rises (6am,Hayward) after breakfast (10am,Hayward) during your lunch break (12pm,alameda) and in the evening offered at all their locations. All locations offer fantastic instruction on the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu jitsu with class sizes small enough to get personalized attention but large enough to get a variety of training from fellow students.
This academy is my second home, and the students and instructors are my second family. We would love for you to come try out jiu jitsu and join the team if you are brad new, or come and share and learn new intricate secrets of ground fighting if you are an experienced grappler! All walks of life are welcomed, we'd love to train with you!"

"Sergio Silva is amazing with kids and is a great teacher. Not only does he teach self defense, but he teaches his students how to avoid physical confrontation as well. I could not recommend this business more. "

" I trained with Team Silva for a few months and overall it was a great experience. I had done other martial arts before but nothing like this that involved light sparring (rolling). At first it's going to be hard because you won't really know what you're doing and to be honest you're going to lose alot at first. But every class Sergio and his instructors do a great job of teaching you new skills to add to your toolkit. Gradually you'll learn more and improve your skills. Rolling then becomes really fun and challenging. It's also great to hang out with new people, see your entire class improve and get better. I'm glad to see that Robert (one of the instructors) is a purple belt now, when I trained with him he just got his blue belt.
If you're not in shape, I wouldn't worry about it. Trust me you'll get in shape by showing up to class and doing jiu jitsu. You're going to be doing a little of everything, cardio, stretching, and controlled movements. The instructors are going to encourage you to work hard but if you're exhausted they're not going to guilt trip you about it if you sit out during one round as long as you're trying. Just as long as you don't spend the entire class sitting along the wall.
There's a wide range of classes from early morning, lunch time, evening, and even some weekend sessions. I especially like the evening classes because they start later than most places so it's easier to attend for those with later commutes. Parking can be tough sometimes since it's right on Park St. but it's manageable if you're willing to walk a couple of blocks.
Regretfully I had to stop because finances. But when I do find a new better job I'll definitely be back. "

" I recently enrolled my 5 year old son soon to be 6 in one of the evening classes. It took a few tries for my son to warm up and step on the mat, as it did look a bit intense to him in the beginning, being said that he is a bit sensitive into trying out new things & being around new people which is why I chose to sign him up to boost up his self esteem & learn self defense when needed. we did a few visuals of the class & did a free trial class where my son became a bit more comfortable. The staff & instructors here are very welcoming, knowledgeable & professional which really is a PLUS & helped my sons personality even more as they don't push you, but better yet put you at ease to feel comfortable to join & if you need to take a break or feel like stepping back for a little it's ok.
Colina (hope I spelled her name right :)) who runs the front & helps with sign ups was super nice & helpful. She explained everything in detail & guided me with suggestions on how my son could become more comfortable & at ease to try out. Instructor Sergio Silva is so down to earth, friendly, welcoming & with realistic expectations for kids that, are around my sons age. I will say they are firm, but again with realistic expectations, great motive & for a great "yes I can do this!" Boost.
Every time I walk in the children look super excited & eager to get on the mat. The classes seem very beneficial & can tell that eventually as you continue to go, you learn a lot & get a lot out of these classes as the instructors do put a lot of effort in the teaching. So far my son is excited & happy that, he started this class & says that .

" I could go on and on telling all the great things about this Academy so I will try to keep it short. I have been a member, along with my two sons and my daughter, for over 4 years. At first I though this would be an awesome activity for my kids but when I started watching the training I thought "I can do this" the truth is I was nervous. I was still recovering from low back surgery so I wasn't sure this was a sport I would last more than a week. Well I am still here and continue training and love the training! When I met Sergio he made me feel welcome and suggested for me to give it a try, so I did. Sergio is a world champion who has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for decades and he cares for his students making sure they learn everything 100%. Now with the new location they have more room, more classes, and more options such as Yoga and Capoeira. Often times Sergio also offers kids programs for summer activities and Parents Night out!!! Sergio isn't just a teacher he is an amazing professor and a great friend he opens the door and makes you feel part of his family. Everyone who trains there learns to be humble and share their knowledge, with the ones who begin to learn I find myself doing that thanks to the foundation Sergio built in me and every person. It is true what other people mentioned this place becomes your second family.
BJJ has help me in many ways, to get strong and protect my body, to be humble, to learn a better way to be a better person with more confidence and respect for others. This type of martial arts is great for kids too and this Academy offers the people and the room to make kids feel comfortable and teaches them to gain confidence, learn respect and discipline.
Be sure to check their website alamedajiujitsu.com they have additional locations in other cities. I have trained at one of the other locations and the people are humble and welcoming as well and great instructors who teach at either location different days of the week.
Thank you professor and friend Sergio Silva and thank you for providing a family oriented environment. I am happy to be part of this family! "

" I've been training BJJ with Sergio for 18 months now and I'm in the best condition that I've been in many years. Great technical instruction every time I come to class from Sergio and Christian. They teach self defense and sport aspects of Brazillian Jiu-jitsu. You will get your ass kicked as a beginner, but everyone on the team will show you how you got caught and how to defend yourself for the next time you roll with them. Prices are reasonable .

" Sergio has done a great job teaching my son(6) BJJ! So good in fact that he has inspired me to take it up at age 40!! I cant say enough good things about Sergio and his staff in Alameda!! "
